Bethanie Mattek-Sands made her comeback from the serious knee injury that she sustained at the 2017 Wimbledon, thanks to the wildcard she received from the Miami Open, last month.
It was a decent comeback even though she lost first round in both singles (to Cornet, 6-2 7-5) and doubles (partnered with Goerges, both to Halep/Begu, 7-6 7-6).
Mattek-Sands has also received a wildcard from Charleston, a tournament where she has a long history, dating back to 2003. In singles, her best result is a third round (2013). But in doubles, Mattek-Sands has won the title twice, including last year with Safarova.

Aleksandra Krunic Pick

Aleksandra Krunic is yet to win an outdoor match since reaching the quarterfinal at Brisbane (first week of 2018) when she defeated Witthoeft and Muguruza (third Top 10 win).
In March, the Serb has gone 0-2 at the Indian Wells and Miami, losing to Irina-Camelia Begu (from a set up) and Maria Sakkari, respectively. Overall, Krunic’s W/L ratio in 2018 stands at 3/6.
This will be Krunic’s third appearance at Charleston. In 2016 and 2017, she made her way into the main draw from the qualifying route, but could not win a main draw match.
The odds are not in Mattek-Sands’ favor in her first encounter with Krunic, who is a decent clay court player and has won the WTA $125k (clay) title at Bol last year. Krunic had also reached two quarterfinals in clay events (Bogota and Bastad) last year.
