Immediately before the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon, six grass tournaments will take place this year. One of them is called now Libema Open in Rossmalen, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands.

The tournament will carry the new name Libema Open with effect from this year. This puts an end to the naming of the tournament by Ricoh Netherlands in the past two years. Libema, also owner of Autotron, was one of the initiators of the grass tournament in 1989. In the meantime, Libema has grown into one of the largest leisure companies in the Netherlands with more than 20 locations and more than 4 million visitors per year. Before that, the tournament was called Ricoh Open, Heineken Trophy, Ordina Open, UNICEF Open and Topshelf Open.
It is currently taking place in ‘s-Hertogenboch in the Netherlands / Holland. Of course, it is played on grass for about 686.080 euros prize money.

History of the Libema Open

In the Netherlands, the Libema Open has been held since 1990, traditionally in the summer. Originally the championship was played in the first week of the June grass series, but in the mid-1990s it was moved to the third, then to the second week. In 1996, women’s competitions were added to the traditional program. Because of this, the status of the tournament has increased. It also made it possible to move its date back to the first week of the June series.
Over the years of its existence, the championship has been renamed several times.

Champions of Libema Open

The main winners in terms of the number of champion titles in the men’s category are the Australian Patrick Rafter, the Croatian Mario Ancic, the Spanish star David Ferrer, the Romanian Horia Tecau, as well as the Czechs Martin Damm and Ciril Suk. The first local tennis player who won the championship more than once, was Sheng Schalken. Among women, the best in the history of the tournament in Hertogenbosch are Justine Henin, Marina Erakovich, Tamarin Tanasugarn, Sarah Errani and others.

2018 Libema Open

Libema Open (‘s-Hertogenbosch) is just one of the six ATP grass tournaments to be held in June. Therefore, a relatively large number of players participate in a grass tournament again right ahead of Wimbledon in order to get as much play practice as possible. Only the top players like Roger Federer usually make a break right ahead of Wimbledon. The last few years have been dominated Gilles Muller, who won last year’s tournament.

The 28 participants will compete from 11 to 17 June in Rosmalen. The former number one in the world, Andy Murray, makes its comeback on the ATP Tour after almost a year and is one of the title favourites of the ATP 250 tournament. The young Russians Karen Khachanov and Daniil Medvedev are eager to be part of the world top 10 players where Richard Gasquet and Fernando Verdasco belong for years. The Netherlands will be represented by Robin Haase.

The draw for the main tournament of both the ATP and WTA events takes place on Saturday 9 June at 2 pm on the Autotron in Rosmalen. The qualifying tournament is on 9 and 10 June. The first game in the main schedule starts at 11 am on Monday 11 June. The finals of the singles are on Sunday, June 17. The tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch is part of the ATP-World-Tour 250 tournaments, so it is about 250 world ranking list points.
