Marco Cecchinato backed up his Budapest triumph with an impressive three sets win over compatriot Fabio Fognini, 5-7 6-3 6-3. It was also his first win over Fognini in three attempts (1-2).
Last week at Budapest, Marco Cecchinato won his maiden tour title after losing the final qualifying match and entering the main draw as a lucky loser. Even during this title-winning run, he did not face anyone ranked as high as Fabio Fognini (#19).
With the win against Fognini, Marco Cecchinato posted his best result in Munich as he faced a first-round exit in his only previous appearance, in 2016 (lost to Igor Sijsling).
The Italian, who won 60 matches in 2017 (58 on clay), has already won 26 matches so far in 2018 with 25 of them coming on clay, which includes two titles at Budapest and Santiago Challenger, and a semifinal at Alicante Challenger.

Marton Fucsovics ended his five-match losing run with a solid straight set win over the 2017 Munich runner-up Guido Pella, 6-4 7-5. It was the Hungarian’s first win since defeating Petros Chrysochos in the quarterfinal of Irving Challenger in March 2018.
Despite the recent poor form, Fucsovics’ 2018 w/l tally is still in the positive zone (16/12), thanks to an excellent start to the season. He posted his career-best slam result at the Australian Open (R16), finished as the runner-up at Canberra Challenger and made the semifinals at Budapest 2 Challenger and Irving Challenger.
This is Fucsovics’ first appearance at ATP Munich. He entered Istanbul and suffered a first-round exit at the hands of Aljaz Bedene during this period of the calendar in 2017.
