In the quarterfinals, the Russian convincingly dealt with his friend and fellow countryman Andrey Rublev, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ prospects ahead of his Australian Open quarter-final against Rafael Nadal looked a bit bleak. The Greek lost seven of the eight previous mutual encounters with the Spanish number two in the world. In the quarterfinals, Tsitsipas had no answer to Nadal’s strong game for a long time. He therefore quickly faced a 0-2 deficit in sets.

Tsitsipas started to serve better and after a tiebreak won in the third set, came into the game better and better. More and more long rallies were won by the 22-year-old tennis player. Late in the fourth set, the Greek managed to take advantage of a break opportunity and even equalize the score. For a long time it seemed to go to a super tiebreaker in the decisive fifth set, but after a sloppy service game from Nadal, Tsitsipas completed the comeback.
