These two players met twice this season, and Stefanos Tsistsipas managed to put up a good show on both occasions, which will give him some belief going into this contest (Thiem leads H2H 2-0).

Stefanos Tsitsipas News

Stefanos Tsitsipas scored yet another dominant win by taking out the world #40 Albert Ramos Vinolas in straight sets, 6-4 7-5, on Thursday. It was his third straight set (and dominant) win of the week, having previously defeated Diego Schwartzman (R2) and Corentin Moutet (R2) in the similar fashion.
Entering his first clay tournament of the season at the Monte Carlo Masters last week, Tsitsipas won three matches and lost the fourth one to David Goffin in two close sets (R2, 6-7 5-7). He will now be hoping to win at least one more match this week at Barcelona (QF will be his fourth match).
The Next Gen Star has already made two quarterfinals (three including challenger) in 2018 but lost both of them, with one of those defeats coming against none other than Dominic Thiem at Doha in the first week of January.
Though his playing strengths suit the fast-paced courts, Stefanos Tsitsipas has done reasonably well on clay so far in 2018 by winning six of his seven matches (6/1). During his days in the Junior circuits, the Greek teenager won the 2016 European Junior Championships (clay), finished as the runner-up at Orange Bowl Championship (clay) and made the quarterfinal at Junior French Open (clay).

Dominic Thiem News

For the second time in two days, Dominic Thiem edged the closely fought first set in the tiebreaker before racing away with the second set, against Jozef Kovalik (R16, 7-6 6-2) and Jaume Munar Clar (R2. 7-6 6-1).
This is Dominic Thiem’s fifth quarterfinal of the season, but he lost the recent three, at Monte Carlo (Rafael Nadal), Acapulco (Juan Martin Del Potro) and Rio de Janeiro (Fernando Verdasco).
In fact, the Austrian #1 made 11 quarterfinal appearances on tour in 2017 but ended up losing 6 of them. On the position side, all those five quarterfinal successes came at the clay events.
Dominic Thiem is defending his runner-up (final) points at Barcelona this week. In 2017, he won his R16 match in the exact scoreline (as this week, against Dan Evans, 7-6 6-2) before winning two more matches against Yuichi Sugita (QF) and Andy Murray (SF).
