Yuichi Sugita suffered his fifth straight defeat when he lost to Jan Lennard Struff in the first round of Monte Carlo Masters last week, 3-6 2-6. It was his first straight-set defeat in those five matches.
It’s been a terrible start to the season for the Japanese who has lost seven first-round matches in the nine tournaments that he has entered so far in 2018. His only main draw wins have come at the Australian Open (R2) and Dubai (QF).
Yuichi Sugita recorded his career-best result in a clay tournament when he progressed to the quarterfinal of Barcelona as a lucky loser last season. He will now be making his third appearance in this event.

Guillermo Garcia Lopez lost two matches in Monte Carlo last week, one in the qualifying stages against Marco Cecchinato and another one in the first round (as a lucky loser) against Andreas Seppi.

Garcia Lopez has appeared at Barcelona eight times in the past but faced first-round exits in five of them, including losing his first round match to Albert Montanes here in 2017.
