Alexander Zverev leads the H2H 4-0 (all on clay), but Jan Lennard Struff managed to nick a set in the recent two meetings, at Munich 2017 and Monte Carlo 2018. Additionally, Zverev has met three German opponents (four matches) so far in 2018 and has beaten them all (Hanfmann, Struff, Gojowczyk x 2). The defending champion Zverev will start as the big favorite but on current form, Struff should be able to make it a close contest.

Alexander Zverev barely managed to survive the second round encounter against compatriot Yannick Hanfmann as he had to fight back from a set down on Wednesday, 6-7 6-4 6-2.
During his title-winning campaign in 2017, Zverev met one German opponent (Jan Lennard Struff in QF) and scored a similar comeback win after losing the first set, 3-6 7-6 7-6. In fact, Zverev has beaten three German players so far in Munich (3/1), and he lost the first set in all those three matches (Benjamin Becker in 2015).
The World #3 made a slow start to the season by facing early round exits at the Australian Open and Rotterdam, but he has now made at least the semifinal in three of his last four tournaments, at Acapulco (SF), Miami (F) and Monte Carlo (SF).

Jan Lennard Struff, who failed to win back-to-back matches in his first nine tournaments of the season, has now made two consecutive quarterfinal appearances on tour. Last week at Budapest, he lost the quarter-final match to the eventual champion Marco Cecchinato despite winning the first set. He is now facing a player who could potentially defend his title at the end of this week.
Struff met Alexander Zverev (next opponent) in the round of 16 at the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks back and produced a fighting performance before going down in three sets, 4-6 6-4 4-6.
In his previous eight appearances here at Munich, Struff reached the quarterfinal once in 2017 (lost to Alexander Zverev) and semifinal once in 2014 (lost to Fabio Fognini).
