Cornet is 3-1 against Hercog in tour-level meetings, winning the last three encounters (each year during 2014-2016). The sole win Hercog secured against Cornet came at 2010 Acapulco (when the tournament was a clay event).

Alize Cornet News

Alize Cornet made her first Charleston appearance since 2011 and won her first match here since her semifinal run in 2008. In that semifinal, the 18-year-old Cornet met Serena Williams for the first time, losing 7-5 6-3 (met Williams six more times since).
The 14th seed dropped just three games against Bondarenko in the first round (6-1 6-2) to secure her first main draw win over the Ukrainian. Cornet won 76% of points behind her first serve and did not expose any break points throughout the match.
It was the Frenchwoman’s first Top 100 win since February when she defeated #27 Kontaveit at Doha. Cornet has not won back-to-back matches since reaching the third round in Melbourne.

Polona Hercog News

Polona Hercog got her first main draw win since January by defeating the Belgian qualifier Maryna Zanevska, 6-1 6-4. She took a two-month break after the first round loss at Melbourne and resumed the tour at Miami (lost the first round to Petkovic as a qualifier).
The Slovenian is a former Charleston semifinalist as well. She reached the final four more recently than Cornet, in 2012, defeating Bartoli, Petrova, and Lepchenko, but was dispatched by Lucie Safarova, 0-6 0-6.
To recover her rank from the nine-month injury break (2016-2017), Hercog played 15 clay tournaments (mostly ITFs) last year, winning 40 matches and six ITF titles out of them.
