Cameron Norrie upset Robin Haase in a three-set first-round encounter to open the Estoril account on his debut appearance, 6-4 3-6 6-3.
The win against Haase was Norrie’s maiden win in a tour-level clay event as his only such appearance ended in a straight set defeat at the hands of Yoshihito Nishioka in the qualifying stages of ATP Houston a few weeks back.
It was a much-needed win for the Brit considering he failed in the first round of four consecutive tournaments at Delray Beach, Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami after doing all the hard work in the qualifying stages.
His only previous main draw win in a tour-level event came at Eastbourne last season when he defeated Horacio Zeballos in the first round.

Roberto Carballes Baena registered his 15th win of the season (all 15 on clay) by defeating Bjorn Fratangelo in the first round of Estoril, 7-6 6-3.
Six of Carballes Baena’s last seven matches have finished in straight sets with him winning just three of them. Last week at Barcelona, he defeated Andreas Haider Maurer in the first round and produced a fighting performance against the world #1 Rafael Nadal in the second round before going down in straight sets, 4-6 4-6.
Though the Spaniard made the semifinal at Alicante Challenger last month and won his maiden tour title at Quito earlier this season, he is yet to win back-to-back main draw matches in a tour-level event since the second week of February 2018 (Quito).
