​Carina Witthoeft scored her career’s biggest win by upsetting world #12 and fellow German, Julia Goerges in the second round of Miami Open. Witthoeft trailed the first set 2-5 before she made a comeback to take the first set in a tiebreaker.
This is Witthoeft’s best showing at Miami (previously reached second rounds during 2016-2017). She started the campaign by defeating yet another German, Tatjana Maria, 6-3 6-4 in the first round.
Witthoeft came into the Miami Open after retiring in the first round of Indian Wells. Moreover, she had not won more than one main draw match at any tournament this season, despite finishing the 2017 season with her maiden career title at Luxembourg.

Zarina Diyas has knocked out the 2006 champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova (making a comeback from surgery) in exactly an hour, 6-1 6-3, to secure her best win of the season. With this win, she matches her Miami best result (2016 third round).
This time last year, Diyas could not participate in the sunshine doubles as she was ranked at #187, outside the qualifying cut-off. However, a year later, she returns to the tournament as the world #56.
Diyas won her first WTA title last year at Japan Open (Tokyo, International). As a qualifier, she won eight matches in a row and defeated Japan’s Miyu Kato in the final.
