The big appointment with Indian Wells 2018 has finally arrived: they call it the Fifth Slam, it takes place in the Californian desert and this is the first one of the nine ATP Master 1000 tournaments of the season.
But women also play here: a Premier Mandatory is inevitable for the WTA.
The Fifth Slam: a bit because it is played over two weeks (one and a half technically, but still more than Monday to Sunday with a weekend in between), and a bit – especially – because of the extraordinary facilities that make the court seem, in fact, a Major tournament location. Indian Wells is part of the BNP Paribas circuit, and together with Miami it forms the Sunshine Double.
Indian Wells Last Year’s Winners & Tennis Prediction for 2018
Obviously, Roger Federer triumphed in 2017; once again the Swiss, who comes to California as number 1, is the big favourite and the player to bet on. Unfortunately, he will not cross swords with Rafa Nadal, who had to forfeit because he is still not at his best physically.
Federer, as we said, is the big favourite: last year he returned to win a title that he had missed since 2012, and got his fifth trophy in the California desert. The Swiss started 2018 with a bang: he won the 20th Grand Slam at the Australian Open after the Hopman Cup and, thanks to the Rotterdam tournament (which he also won) he returned to number 1 of the ATP ranking, becoming the oldest ever to succeed . Now he is aiming not only to confirm himself on top of the world, but obviously also to win another Master 1000: on his way the main opponent could be one of the new guard, for example Alex Zverev, or the usual Grigor Dimitrov. The condition of Djokovic is to be tested while Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka (finalist last year) are still in the pits, together with David Goffin.

Big News: Serena Williams returns to the WTA at Indian Wells 2018
Regarding women, we have the usual: Simona Halep who is back number 1, Caroline Wozniacki – winner of the Australian Open, and Angelique Kerber. It’s difficult for Elena Vesnina to repeat the last year’s experience, and then the wonderful news is that of the return of Serena Williams, after giving birth, and of Victoria Azarenka, who had to face a difficult legal battle for the custody of the child.
