Mihaela Buzarnescu, who will soon be a 30-year-old, will make her Indian Wells debut this week. Never in her career, she has even played a qualifying match in any of the four Premier Mandatory events.
Buzarnescu’s 2018 has commenced to the same tune as her breakout 2017 season. She advanced to her career’s first WTA final at Hobart, where she lost to Mertens in three sets.
Last month, she made to the round of 16 of a Premier 5 (Doha) by defeating a Grand Slam champion and Top 10 player (Ostapenko) for the first time in her career. That result also helped her break into top 40 for the first time in her career.
Jennifer Brady WTA Pick
Jennifer Brady is yet to win a tour-level match this season. Her last wins came more than a month ago, at the $100,000 Midland, when she reached the semifinal of the ITF event, defeating Francoise Abanda and Bianca Andreescu.
Brady also had the best season of her career in 2017. She reached the fourth round of two slams, at Australian Open as a qualifier, and later in the year, at the US Open. She finished off the season with a semifinal at Hong Kong and a career-high ranking of #60.
