Goerges, who will meet the American for the first time, is the heavy favorite to pass her first hurdle at Charleston. The last time Ahn met a Top 15 player was at the 2008 US Open (#7 Safina) when the then 16-year-old lost 6-3 6-4.

Julia Goerges Prediction

Julia Goerges begins her fifth Charleston campaign as the fifth seed of the tournament, making it her first appearance since 2014. The German has reached as far as the quarterfinal stage in this tournament, back in 2011 (lost to the eventual runner-up, Vesnina).
Goerges made an excellent start to the season, with a title at Auckland (def. Wozniacki), semifinal at St. Petersburg and quarterfinal at Doha. However, in March, she has suffered third and second-round losses at Indian Wells and Miami, respectively.
Goerges became a Top 10 player for the brief period after St. Petersburg. This was aided by her late-season exploits in 2017, titles at Moscow and Zhuhai, along with three other finals (including a clay final at Bucharest).

Kristie Ahn Prediction

Charleston debutante Kristie Ahn shocked the 2010 champion Sam Stosur by handing her a straight set defeat (6-2 6-4) in about an hour and 18 minutes. Stosur made Ahn’s life easier by spraying an unforgivable amount of errors, mostly on the forehand side.
This is Ahn’s 10th Top 100 career win, but the first victory over a former slam champion. The 2014 Stanford University graduate scored her career’s biggest win (ranking-wise) by defeating #39 Suarez Navarro in the qualifying rounds of Sydney, earlier this year.

Tennis Pick: Julia Goerges to win the match
