Kuznetsova leads Barthel 3-0, with one win on clay (2011 Marbella), hard (2016 Auckland) and grass (2017 Eastbourne) each.

Svetlana Kuznetsova News

Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeking to register her first win of the season, has received a wildcard from the tournament, making her the only Russian in the draw. This is the 2009 French Open champion’s first International-level clay event since 2016 Prague.
Following a wrist surgery in the preseason, Kuznetsova has to skip the first two months of the season to recover. As a result, she missed a slam (could not defend the fourth round points) for the first time since 2013 Wimbledon and third time since 2002.
Despite reporting minor pain, Kuznetsova started the season at the sunshine doubles but ended up empty-handed as she lost to Sabalenka (Indian Wells) and Zarina Diyas (Miami) in straight sets.

Mona Barthel News

Mona Barthel will start her clay season after suffering five first-round losses so far in 2018, latest at the hands of Babos at Miami. The German has good memories of clay from last year, having won her fourth title at Prague and reaching the fourth round of Rome.
Despite suffering flurry of first-round losses last season, 2017 (year-end rank of #48) was still much better than 2016 when she suffered prolonged illness (took a three-month break) and her rank dropped to as low as #190.
Barthel, a former Top 30 player, over the next few weeks has to defend critical clay points, failing which will certainly leave her outside the top 100 once again.
