Svitolina, the winner of eleven career titles, successfully defended her Dubai title earlier this year (d. Kasatkina, Kerber, and Osaka). It was the second time in her career that she had defended a title, after Baku (2013-14).

Petra Martic is through to the second round of Rome after dominating the opening round match against Lesia Tsurenko, winning seven straight games at one point and defending all six break points to secure the win (6-1 6-2) in an hour and 36 minutes.
This time last year, Martic was ranked #327 and playing an ITF in Germany. She went on to post her first slam fourth round at Roland Garros (d. Sevastova and Keys). Since then, she has posted fourth rounds at Wimbledon, Australian Open and a quarterfinal at Indian Wells.
Martic is seeking her career’s best win-by-rank, having defeated #5 Petra Kvitova at 2012 Pan Pacific Open (Tokyo). Her next top 10 win since 2012 would come at this year’s Indian Wells, where she defeated #6 Ostapenko (6-3 6-3).
