Milos Raonic produced a dominant serving performance to edge past Mirza Basic in a closely fought first round match, 7-6 6-2. The big-serving Canadian served 15 aces and won 97% of his first serve points during the win.
Apart from losing early in his first three tournaments of the season (Brisbane, Australian Open and Delray Beach), Milos Raonic has managed to win at least two matches in the other four tournaments that he entered so far this season, at Indian Wells (SF), Miami (QF), Madrid (R16) and Monte Carlo (R16).
Seventh seed Milos Raonic, who is making his debut at ATP Stuttgart this week, usually starts his grass season from ATP Halle or ATP Queen’s club, but given his lack of form and fitness this season, he has decided to give himself more preparation time for Wimbledon.
It’s on grass where Milos Raonic’s most of the career success has come at, such as finishing as the runner-up at Wimbledon (2016), reaching the semifinal of Wimbledon (2014), quarterfinal of Wimbledon (2017), runner-up finish at Queen’s club (2016) and a quarterfinal appearance at Queen’s Club (2015).
Marton Fucsovics comfortably dispatched Denis Kudla in straight sets to register his first main draw win at ATP Stuttgart, having lost his only previous main draw match to Yannick Hanfmann in 2017.
The Hungarian, who could not win a main draw match on grass before 2017 (at any level), managed to win seven matches on grass in 2017, including winning the title at Ilkley challenger. He has gone one step further this season by securing his first-ever main draw win in a tour-level grass event.
The 2010 Junior Wimbledon Singles Champion is enjoying his career-best season in 2018. Apart from winning his maiden tour title at Geneva a few weeks back, he also posted his career-best result in a grand slam, the round of 16 appearence at the Australian Open.
In the pair’s first ever meeting, Milos Raonic, once again, will need to be strong on serve and could probably need a tiebreaker to negotiate this win.
