After failing to defend his title and semifinal points at Hertogenbosch and London in the last two weeks, Gilles Muller will be desperate to earn some ranking points at Eastbourne this week. The 2017 Wimbledon quarterfinalist is having a terrible season so far in 2018, having gone 8/14 in the opening six months of the season. John Millman opened his account on grass this season by defeating Nicolas Mahut and Marius Copil in the qualifying stages of ATP London last week. Unfortunately, he was drawn against the eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic in the first round, 2-6 1-6.
The Australian entered ATP Eastbourne once in 2012 but could not get out of the qualifying stages, losing the final qualifying match to Paul Henri Mathieu, 3-6 2-6.
Though John Millman suffered first-round defeat in his recent four tournaments (London, Stuttgart, French Open and Heilbronn 2 Challenger), he would probably be satisfied with his performances and results during the clay season, where he recorded his career-best result by finishing as the runner-up at Budapest.
Gilles Muller leads the H2H 2-1, but this will be their first meeting on grass. This is an excellent opportunity for both these players to register their first main draw win in Eastbourne as Gilles Muller (better player on grass) is in a terrible form at the moment while John Millman (in better form) hasn’t got a great record on grass.
