Svitolina and Osaka split the head-to-head 2-2. Their latest meeting came just a few weeks ago at Dubai when Svitolina won the last eight encounter (6-2 6-4) en route to the title. Naomi Osaka, fresh off the Indian Wells title, defeated the eight-time Miami Open winner, Serena Williams (6-3 6-2) in their first meeting. It was Williams’ worst loss (ranking wise) at Miami (the previous one was against #19 Kuznetsova in 2016).
Osaka debuted at Miami in 2016 as a wildcard and defeated Errani and Parmentier to reach the third round (currently her second-best Premier Mandatory result).
Prior to the Indian Wells, Osaka had never won a pro title in her career, including ITFs (not even a title during her Junior days). With this Premier Mandatory title, she has achieved her career high rank of #22.
