Svitolina and Osaka split the head-to-head 2-2. Their latest meeting came just a few weeks ago at Dubai when Svitolina won the last eight encounter (6-2 6-4) en route to the title. Svitolina would be the favorite to progress further as fatigue could be an issue for Osaka, who has played eight matches over the last two weeks.

Elina Svitolina News

Elina Svitolina suffered just her third defeat of the season when she lost to Carla Suarez Navarro in the third round of Indian Wells earlier this month. Her previous two losses have come against #16 Kvitova in Doha third round and to #37 Mertens in the quarterfinal of the Australian Open.
Svitolina has already won two titles this season, Brisbane (as the third seed) and Dubai (top seed and defending champion). In fact, en route to her title at Dubai, she lost just 26 games (fewest games lost in winning a WTA title this season).
Since debuting in the main draw in 2014 (played qualifying rounds in 2013), Svitolina has a 7/4 record at Miami Open, which includes two fourth-round appearances. Last year, she exited from the opening round after losing to Mattek-Sands.

Naomi Osaka News

Naomi Osaka, fresh off the Indian Wells title, defeated the eight-time Miami Open winner, Serena Williams (6-3 6-2) in their first meeting. It was Williams’ worst loss (ranking wise) at Miami (the previous one was against #19 Kuznetsova in 2016).
Osaka debuted at Miami in 2016 as a wildcard and defeated Errani and Parmentier to reach the third round (currently her second-best Premier Mandatory result).
Prior to the Indian Wells, Osaka had never won a pro title in her career, including ITFs (not even a title during her Junior days). With this Premier Mandatory title, she has achieved her career high rank of #22.
