Joao Sousa continued his recent good form with a three-set win over Mirza Basic, 6-3 3-6 6-4. It was the second unconvincing performance of the week from the Portuguese but was enough to seal the progression once again. He previously defeated Pedro Martinez Portero after exchanging nine breaks of serve in the match, 7-5 7-5.
The Portuguese has now won seven of his last eight matches, including his two wins in the Davis Cup over the Ymer Brothers. This is an incredible turnaround considering he failed to win consecutive matches in his opening six tournaments of the season.
Joao Sousa faced a second-round exit at the hands of Facundo Bagnis in his only previous appearance here at Marrakech (2016), making this his best result in this event.
