Polona Hercog News

Polona Hercog, the former semifinalist (2012), will make her second-ever appearance at Charleston. Six years ago, while ranked #38, she defeated #7 Bartoli, #35 Nadia Petrova and Kimiko Date, before losing out to Lucie Safarova, 6-0 6-0, in the last four.
Hercog, suffering from multiple injuries, took an eight-month break from August 2016 to April 2017. Her rank dropped to #265, but thanks to 40 clay court wins, mostly in the last three months of 2017 (which gave her six ITF titles), she finished the season at #102.
This year, she has played just three tournaments, including a quarterfinal at Auckland (losing to eventual champion, Goerges) and a successful qualification at Miami (lost first round to Petkovic).

Maryna Zanevska News

Maryna Zanevska defeated Gabriela Dabrowski and Dayana Yastremska in the qualifying round to make her main draw debut at Charleston. This will also be her first tour-level main draw match of the season.
The 24-year-old Belgian, ranked #166, last won a main draw match of a WTA tournament in July 2015 at Bad Gastein when, as a qualifier, she defeated fellow qualifier, Ana Bogdan.
Zanevska won a $50,000 ITF at Zhuhai (China) last month, defeating Kuzmova, Kalinskaya, and Kostyuk.
Hercog has met Zanevska twice on the ITF circuit (Olomouc, 2013 and Marseille, 2015), and never allowed Zanevska (who was then playing for Ukraine) to win more than three games in a match.
