Kristina Mladenovic begins her sixth Mutua Madrid Open campaign with statement straight-set win over #13 Coco Vandeweghe in an hour and 13 minutes. She took some time to find her footing in the first set (7-5), getting broken twice, but compensated by delivering a 6-0 second set.
Mladenovic reached her career’s biggest final at Madrid last year, defeating Kuznetsova, Cirstea, and Konjuh. She would lose to Halep in the final (7-5 6-7 6-2), but it was still an excellent week, considering her previous best result at the tournament was a second-round appearance (2012).
After Madrid, the Frenchwoman went on to post her first slam quarterfinal at the French Open last year, knocking out the defending champion Garbine Muguruza, before being defeated by former semifinalist Timea Bacsinszky.
Mladenovic snapped her 15-match losing streak, which started last August at Washington D.C., at St. Petersburg where was defending her first WTA title (l. to Kvitova in the final). Since then, she has won back-to-back matches only on one occasion, at Acapulco.

Shuai Zhang had upset world #21 and Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka, 6-1 7-5, to register her first top 100 win since the Australian Open, when she defeated the US Open champion, Sloane Stephens.
The Chinese #1 has found her confidence after advancing to the semifinals of Prague last week, where she secured three straight-set wins over #144 Paolini, #210 Ruse and #101 Voegele (l. to eventual champion Kvitova).
It was Zhang’s first WTA semifinal since winning the Guangzhou Open last September, defeating Krunic, Rodina, and Kozlova. The former world #22 arrived at Madrid having lost her previous two appearances in the first round, 2014 (Begu) and 2017 (Sevastova).
