Alize Cornet will make her first appearance at the Indian Wells since 2015. She withdrew from the last two editions due to injuries.
Cornet had a decent month in Australia, when she reached the quarterfinal of Brisbane, defeating Caroline Garcia and Lucic-Baroni. At Melbourne, she ended the winning run of Julia Goerges to advance to the third round.
However, her form has been fluctuating a lot in the recent three tournaments. She offered no resistance to Kasatkina and Pliskova at St. Petersburg and Doha, before going down in easy straight sets.
Moreover, last week at Acapulco, she faced a shocking defeat at the hands of #139 Rebecca Peterson. The Frenchwomen’s serve broken five times in the match.
Sofya Zhuk WTA Picks
Sofya Zhuk has been awarded a wildcard to make her debut at the Indian Wells. She was offered wildcards at the Miami Open in the last two years, another Premier Mandatory.
Zhuk won her first pro title at the age of 14 in 2014, a $10,000 clay tournament at Kazakhstan. The following year, she won the Wimbledon Juniors, defeating fellow Russian, Anna Blinkova.
Earlier in the season, Zhuk advanced to the biggest final of her career, the $125k WTA tournament at Newport Beach (California), where she lost to Danielle Collins.
