Top seed Stan Wawrinka produced his best performance since coming back from the injury to knock out the American youngster Jared Donaldson in straight sets in Wednesday’s second round match (R1 bye), 6-3 6-4.
This win also ended the Swiss #2’s four-match losing run and gave him the first win since February 2018, when he defeated Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinal of ATP Sofia 2018.
Apart from losing his quarterfinal match to Federico Delbonis on his ATP Geneva debut in 2015, Stan Wawrinka has won all the matches in the next two editions (champion in 2016 and 2017). He is currently on a nine-match winning run in this tournament.
“From the beginning, I did not feel welcome here (Geneva), but it is important to play here in Switzerland. I would like to make it clear; I received a large financial offer from Lyon, but I declined it. I am here for the fans.” – said the two-time defending champion Wawrinka earlier this week.

Marton Fucsovics backed up his impressive performance against Alberto Ramos Vinolas (R1) with another excellent win over the 2018 Delray Beach Champion and 2018 Estoril runner-up Francis Tiafoe in the second round, 7-6 6-4.
This is only the Hungarian’s third career quarterfinal appearance on tour, and two of them have come here in Switzerland (Basel 2017 and Geneva 2018). He lost the previous two quarterfinals to Maximilian Marterer in Munich 2018 and Marin Cilic in Basel 2017.
The last time Fucsovics met an opponent from Switzerland was Roger Federer in the round of 16 at the Australian Open earlier this season, when his career-best grand slam run was ended by the Swiss #1 in straight sets.
