Tennys Sandgren managed to win more than one match in a tournament for the first time since the Australian Open 2018 by defeating Blaz Kavcic (R1) and Nicolas Kicker (R2) in Houston this week. He will face a second Argentinian opponent in two days when he takes on Guido Pella in the quarterfinal.
Between the Australian Open and Houston, the American could win only two matches from seven outings (2/5), with both of those wins being gifted by the opponents, who retired midway through the match, Roberto Carballes Baena at Rio de Janeiro and Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Indian Wells.
Tennys Sandgren had his second best season on clay in 2017 (16/8, 2012- 17/7) when he won the title at Savannah Challenger, and made the semifinal at Sarasota Challenger and Prostejov Challenger.
While Pella has made a handful of quarterfinal appearances in clay ATP World Tour events, this will be Tennys Sandgren’s first such match on clay.
