Daria Kasatkina News

Daria Kasatkina started her title defense campaign by negotiating a three-set victory over Christine McHale. The Russian hit two more winners and three less unforced errors than the American, although breaking her serve thrice in the decider.
Kasatkina’s last four tournaments have either ended in a first-round loss (Doha and Miami) or as the runner-up (Dubai and Indian Wells). Apart from those two finals, the 20-year-old has also advanced to St. Petersburg semifinal (lost to Mladenovic).
Kasatkina, who describes Charleston as a “perfect place to make the transition from hard to clay”, won the title last year on her second-only appearance, by defeating Ostapenko (future French Open champion) in the final.
The world #12 made her debut at this tournament in 2016, when she fell to the eventual champion, Sloane Stephens, in the quarterfinal. Her current w/l in this event currently stands at 10-1.

Irina-Camelia Begu News

Irina-Camelia Begu has defeated two much lower-ranked opponents, #154 Garcia Perez and #202 Claire Liu, to enter the last 16. This is Begu’s first consecutive tour-level wins since the quarterfinal appearance at the Shenzhen Open (lost to #1 Halep).
The Romanian is one win away from making it four Charleston quarterfinals in a row. Every year, she has secured one or two notable wins in this tournament, Stosur in 2017, Garcia and Puig in 2016 and Siegemund in 2015.
Last year, Begu won 13 clay matches (compared to eight on hard-court), including a title at her home tournament of Bucharest, where she defeated Julia Goerges in the final.
