The 2007 champion and 2011 semifinalist returns to Houston for the first time since 2014 to make his seventh appearance at this tournament. The big-serving Croatian is currently on a four-match losing run with three of them being straight-set defeats.
Ivo Karlovic has already played 21 tiebreakers from his 11 matches so far in 2018, and he ended up losing 11 (tiebreakers) of them.
The former World #14 finished his 2017 season with a minus W/L ratio (16/21) and was even forced to retire from his final match of the season, at ATP Antwerp. Though he did not retire from any of his matches or admit to any fitness issues so far in 2018, his results and performances suggest he may not be in his best condition at the moment.

Taro Daniel Prediction

After failing to win back-to-back matches in the opening two months of the new season, Taro Daniel finally had some decent success at the Indian Wells, where he defeated Novak Djokovic and Cameron Norrie to reach the third round (as a qualifier).
His win against Cameron Norrie in the Indian Wells was only his first main draw win of the season. Prior to that, he failed to win a main draw match in five other tournaments that he entered in 2018.
However, the World #111 failed to build on the momentum by failing in the qualifying stages of the Miami Open a few weeks back. He will now make his debut at Houston, and this will be his first match on clay since losing in the first round to Stefano Napolitano at Sibiu challenger last season.
Unlike Ivo Karlovic (3/4), Taro Daniel (22/16) did post some good results on clay last season, such as finishing as the runner-up at Lisbon Challenger, semifinal at Szczecin challenger and the quarterfinal at ATP Estoril and Sevilla Challenger.
