Errani met Pera a few weeks ago for the first time in the qualifying rounds of Dubai. The Italian defeated Pera 6-4 6-4 and progressed to the second round of the tournament.

Sara Errani had a close escape in the second round clash against Mihaela Buzarnescu. After losing the first set in under 40 minutes, she leveled it up by winning the second set tiebreaker and secured the progression by breaking Buzarnescu thrice in the decider.
In the whole affair, which lasted two hours and 27 minutes, Errani hit just 15 winners (vs. Buzarnescu’s 47) but committed 25 less unforced errors as well (21 to 46). She also took a medical time-out in the third set for her lower back.
In her five previous Charleston appearances, Errani has reached the semifinal once (2016), along with two other quarterfinals (2014-15). This year, she is playing with a wildcard.
Errani ended the 2017 season outside the top 100 for the first time since 2006 due to a two-month anti-doping ban. After winning a WTA $125k at the Indian Wells last month (def. Bondarenko, Collins, Anisimova), Errani has returned to the top 100.

Bernarda Pera has guaranteed her top 100 debut next week after defeating Jana Cepelova and Dayana Yastremska in the early rounds of Charleston.
The 23-year-old American, who is debuting at Charleston, has never been in the last 16 stage of a tour-level tournament.
Earlier this year, she made her slam main draw debut at the Australian Open as a lucky loser and secured her career’s first top 10 win by defeating Johanna Konta, 6-4 7-5. Her dream run was ended by Strycova in the round of 32.
This time last year, Pera was ranked 321st in the world. After playing in ten clay ITF tournaments, including winning her biggest one at $80,000 Olomouc (def. Kristyna Pliskova in the final), she broke into the top 150.
