Khachanov vs Zverev Tennis Pick

Alexander Zverev showed the quality of a champion when he made a sensational comeback, on multiple occasions, during his third round match against Damir Dzumhur. The German #1 was one game (return game) away from the defeat in the fourth set and saved a match point (on serve) in the fifth set before sealing the progression, 6-2 3-6 4-6 7-6 7-5.
It was his second win in two matches in which he wasn’t the best player on the court. Earlier this week, he recovered from the losing position to win a five-set thriller against Dusan Lajovic in the second round, 2-6 7-5 4-6 6-1 6-2. It’s better to play out some close matches in the early stages of the tournament as these are the kind of wins that gives the confidence to go all the way.
The win against Dzumhur was Zverev’s 20th win on clay this season from the possible 23 (20/3, including Davis Cup). Those three defeats came against Rafael Nadal (x2) and Kei Nishikori. This impressive run on clay earned him his second consecutive title in Munich and third Masters title at Madrid.
This is the world #3 and second seed Alexander Zverev’s career-best performance in the French Open. His only previous round of 16 appearance came in the Wimbledon last season when he was taken down in five sets by Milos Raonic.
Karen Khachanov produced his best performance of the fortnight when he completely outplayed the French #1 Lucas Pouille in straight sets, 6-3 7-5 6-3.
Khachanov will now play his second consecutive round of 16 match in Paris (three appearances). In 2017, he defeated John Isner in the third round but lost to the top seed Andy Murray in the round of 16. He will be hoping to avoid a similar result when he takes on the #2 seed Alexander Zverev on Sunday.
Only once the Russian youngster has managed to win more than three matches in a tournament this season, at ATP Marseille in February 2018, where he went on to win his second career title on tour.
These two players met once on the indoor hard courts of St. Petersburg (Khachanov’s home) in 2016 when Zverev scored a straight-set win. Though Khachanov has been playing better tennis in Paris this fortnight, Alexander Zverev will start as the favorite and is expected to progress further as well.
