Richard Gasquet won their previous meeting which happened to be the title decider at Antwerp (indoor hard) in 2016. However, considering his current fitness level, Diego Schwartzman is one of the worst matchups for Gasquet, and it’s going to be a massive challenge for him.

Diego Schwartzman recovered from a first set bagel to see off the challenge from compatriot Guido Pella in the first round, 0-6 6-2 6-3. It was the Argentinian’s third win in a row after defeating Christian Garin and Nicolas Jarry in the Davis Cup Group One tie on clay earlier this month.
However, the diminutive Argentinian has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since winning the title at Rio de Janeiro in the third week of February 2018.
Making his Monte Carlo debut in 2015, Diego Schwartzman lost his first round match to Jeremy Chardy in straight sets. But he defeated Lennard Struff and Roberto Bautista Agut before losing to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of 2017 edition.
Schwartzman has entered two clay tournaments so far in 2018 and made at least the quarterfinal in both of them, at Buenos Aires (QF) and Rio de Janeiro (W).

Richard Gasquet, who ended his run of three straight opening-round losses with a win over Thomas Fabbiano in Marrakech, has registered his fourth first-round win of the season at Monte Carlo this week. The Frenchman put in yet another shaky performance against compatriot Jeremy Chardy but managed to end up on the winning side this time around (lost to the same opponent in Miami last month).
Gasquet has got a decent record here at Monte Carlo, having made the semifinal once in 2005 and quarterfinal twice in 2007 and 2013. However, he lost the second round match here in his most recent visit, against Lucas Pouille in 2016.
Though the former World #7 made the quarterfinal at Marrakech last week, he is yet to produce a dominant and convincing performance since finishing as the runner-up at Montpellier earlier in the season (second week of February).
