Tennys Sandgren posted his best result on tour since the quarterfinal run at the Australian Open 2018 by finishing as the runner-up at Houston earlier this month. It was also his maiden final appearance in a tour-level event (on all surfaces).
However, the American failed to back up that performance (Houston) in the following week as he faced the first-round exit from Monte Carlo (did not have enough time to recover) and was beaten convincingly by Malek Jaziri in the first round of ATP Barcelona.
Sandgren has entered 11 tournaments so far in 2018 with nine of them being his debut appearance, except the Australian Open and Houston. He will make yet another debut when he takes on Francis Tiafoe in the first round of ATP Estoril on Monday.

After making a slow start to the season, Francis Tiafoe posted impressive results in February such as reaching the quarterfinal at New York and winning his maiden tour title at Delray Beach in the following week.
Like Sandgren, Tiafoe has failed to build on the momentum by failing early in the following three tournaments. Entering his first clay tournament of the season at Houston, Tiafoe was knocked out by the eventual champion Steve Johnson in the second round (Sandgren took a set off Johnson in the final of Houston).
The Next Gen Star will be hoping to reproduce his results on clay from 2017, when he won two Challenger titles at Aix en Provence challenger and Sarasota Challenger, including ten wins from 13 outings.
