This first round match between Vera Zvonareva and Natalia Vikhlyantseva will be a battle of two different generations of Russian tennis. The former world #2, Zvonareva, will take on her 12 years younger compatriot as she plays her first Indian Wells since 2015.

Zvonareva is a former Indian Wells champion. She swept the tournament in 2009 when she won in singles (defeating Kvitova, Li Na, Wozniacki, Azarenka and Ivanovic) as well as in doubles with Azarenka.
Zvonareva’s comeback from the motherhood break has been a long journey. Earlier in the season, she won her first Premier main draw match since making her comeback at St. Petersburg (playing as a wildcard), defeating Kiki Bertens.

Natalia Vikhlyantseva Tennis Pick

Natalia Vikhlyantseva is yet to win a main draw match in 2018. Last week, she played at the Indian Wells $125k tournament, the Oracle Challenger, but lost in straight sets to #118 Nicole Gibbs in the first round.
Last year, Vikhlyantseva played her first ever match at the Indian Wells, in the qualifying rounds. But she was stunned by Jacqueline Cako in three sets, who was ranked #263 at that time.
Zvonareva is the slight favorite in this all-Russian match-up. She has already won two qualifying round matches this week to get into the main draw, defeating Vicky Duval and Bernarda Pera. If Zvonareva finds a way to prevail in this match, it will be her first win at Indian Wells since 2012 when she was a seeded player.
