Kenin has never met Barty or, for that matter, any other Australian on tour. Barty would be the favorite, but the teenager played plenty of clay ITFs on the home soil last year (2017 clay W/L- 17/10).

Ashleigh Barty News

Ashleigh Barty got her first wins of the season on the US soil when she defeated teenager Claire Liu and Petra Martic at Miami last month. She eventually lost to the world #4 Elina Svitolina in the fourth round.
These wins in Miami gives the Australian #1 her 10th victory of the season. Earlier in the season, Barty advanced to the final of her home Premier tournament, Sydney. She lost that final to Kerber in straight sets.
Barty played at Charleston once in the past, before walking away from tennis, in 2013. However, the then 197th ranked Barty was beaten thoroughly by #145 Nastassja Burnett (6-1 6-1) in the first qualifying match.

Sofia Kenin News

Sofia Kenin shined in her home Premier Mandatory tournaments, Indian Wells and Miami, as she made it through the qualifying rounds in both these tournaments to reach the second and third round, respectively.
These runs not only made the 19-year-old a Top 100 player but also moved her as high as #85. Last year in September, Kenin was voted WTA breakthrough of the month for her third round run at the US Open.
Kenin made her debut at Charleston in 2017 and booked her place in the main draw after defeating #220 Fiona Ferro and #104 Taylor Townsend in the qualifying rounds. She lost the main draw match to Mattek-Sands (6-4 6-4).
