Goerges leads the series by 3-2 (1-1 on clay), including winning the last two meetings – both at Kasatkina’s home tournament, Moscow (2017 and 2016). Their previous clay clash happened in 2015 Bad Gastein, which was won by Kasatkina from a set down.

Daria Kasatkina Tennis Pick

The third seed Daria Kasatkina gets one step closer to defending her first career title as she blows away the 13th seed Irina-Camelia Begu in an hour and 3 minutes to move into the quarterfinal, her third one in three Charleston appearances.
The Russian kicked off her title defense campaign with a two hours and 16 minutes tussle against Christine McHale. Charleston is the only tour-level title the 20-year-old has won, despite appearing in three more finals since then.
Kasatkina, who reached back-to-back finals at Dubai (l. to Svitolina) and Indian Wells (l. to Osaka) this season, came into this week with an opening round loss at Miami (vs. the American teenager, Sofia Kenin).
After Indian Wells, Kasatkina became the new Russian #1 and reached a career-high rank of #11. In the entirety of the 2017 season, she advanced to just two semifinals. By contrast, on Friday, she will be bidding for her fourth semifinal of this season.

Julia Goerges News

Julia Goerges reached her fourth quarterfinal of the season by knocking out the reigning Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka in straight sets. The German got into early trouble, trailing the first set 0-3, but eventually won it in the tiebreaker.
It was a much better performance from the German #2 as compared to her opening round match against Kristie Ahn, where she got away with hitting 50 unforced errors. That match ended in a third set tiebreaker.
Goerges has reached the quarterfinal of Charleston once before, in 2011 (lost to eventual runner-up, Vesnina). However, after losing in the first round in 2014, she did not participate in the event in the next three editions.
Since 2017, Goerges has reached a total of 11 quarterfinals, with an 8-3 record (1-0 on clay). She started the year with a title at Auckland (third consecutive title after Moscow and Zhuhai last year) and made her Top 10 debut after St. Petersburg semifinal.
