Maria Sakkari would be delighted with her performances at the Indian Wells. She had never won a Premier Mandatory main draw match before entering the Indian Wells but erased that unwanted record by storming into the round of 16, defeating Vekic, Barty, and Vandeweghe.
This run was also critical for Sakkari as she started the season with five straight losses, from Shenzhen to all the way to Doha. However, all of those five losses were well-fought matches with three of them going to the distance.
Sakkari had a breakout week at Wuhan last year, where she reached the semifinals (as a qualifier) of the Premier 5, securing her first top 10 win in the process (vs. Wozniacki).
